We use a train of sub-200 attosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses with energies just above the ionization threshold in argon to create a train of temporally localized electron wave packets. We study the energy transfer from a strong infrared (IR) laser field to the ionized electrons as a function of the delay between the XUV and IR fields.

His laser forms pulses of light with a wavelength of 800 nm Attosecond science works somewhat like sonar or 3D laser mapping, but at a much smaller scale. When an attosecond light pulse passes through a material, the interaction with electrons in the material distorts the pulse. Ferenc Krausz from the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Munich is considered the founder of attosecond physics. His goal is to develop new laser tec identical attosecond pulses [11] which are synchronized with an IR laser field. The pulse to pulse separation in the train is tailored to exactly match an optical cycle of the laser field, and the electron momentum distributions are detected with a velocity map imaging spectrometer (VMIS) [16,17].

Attosecond pulse generation and detection The conjecture of producing a train of attosecond pulses using high-order harmonic generation (HHG) has been put forward almost 10 years ago. More recently, detailed theoretical investigations have confirmed this possibility and shown that it is indeed conceivable to generate a train or even a single attosecond pulse. 2017-09-28 · The discovery 30 years ago that laser light can be boosted to much higher energies and shorter pulses - just billionths of a billionth of a second, or attoseconds, long - is the basis of attosecond science, where researchers observe and try to control the movements of electrons. When atoms interact with strong laser fields, high-order harmonics are generated. In the time domain, this radiation consists of ultrashort "attosecond" light pulses with central photon energy in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) energy domain and duration of the order of 100 as. Attosecond physics deals with phenomena occurring when ultrashort laser pulses, with duration on the femto- and sub-femtosecond time scales, interact with atoms, molecules or solids.

When an attosecond light pulse passes through a material, the interaction with electrons in the With the reflected laser field serving as a streaking field, the attosecond electron pulses generated at different optical cycles can be separated transversely in the far-field. Science at the timescale of attoseconds—a billionth of a billionth of a second—allows interrogation of electron dynamics, a study with huge promise for many disciplines. But accessing those ultrashort timescales today relies on custom-built lasers or access to world-class laser science facilities, which is often limited.
